ZINES AND THE STRIKE

Throughout the strike period, students met regularly to produce and distribute the strike zine, Picket Realism. The purpose of which was to both inform and entertain, involving a range of contributions from both students and staff. Through its curation and distribution, I came to realise the zine would be the most appropriate medium for the content of my project. The culture and the aesthetic of the zine acts as a prefigurative tool for many of the main themes I have presented and discussed. The concept of the zine as a DIY tool, low cost and easy to reproduce seemed fitting with the sort of autonomous and spontaneous nature of the content ahead. The sociality of ‘zine culture’ manifests itself in the form of zine-fairs, often based on egalitarian notions of trade and barter which evade the dogmatic principles of the mainstream economic market.
